San Juan County Sheriff’s Department reported responding to these calls:
Jan. 30: A San Juan Island man reportedly sideswiped a car on Cattle Point Road, failed to stop, and was later arrested for an alleged assault following an early evening altercation at his Friday Harbor home. The 39-year-old, who was taken into custody at about 9 p.m., reportedly was flown off-island for treatment of a high level of intoxication. He had reportedly drifted into the oncoming lane of traffic when he clipped a vehicle headed in the opposite direction on Cattle Point Road, causing $5,000 in damage.
Feb. 3: An Orcas Island man was arrested for DUI following a late-night single-car collision on Olga Road. The 63-year-old was taken into custody at the scene at about 11:30 p.m. He reportedly missed a bend in the road near the intersection of Shadow Lane and then lost control of his SUV.
Feb. 8: A San Juan Island teen accused of snatching $5 of merchandise from a Friday Harbor grocery store was arrested for shoplifting. The 16-year-old boy was taken into custody at about 12:45 p.m., and then later released to his parents.
Feb. 11: A warrant led to an early evening arrest of a San Juan Island man, who may face additional charges after deputies reportedly found marijuana among his belongings. The 48-year-old was apprehended near the intersection of Nichols and B streets at about 9 p.m.
Feb. 14: Barking dogs, a neighbor’s complaint, multiple warnings and repeated violations of Friday Harbor’s public nuisance law prompted a ticket for a resident of the town. The ticket was issued after a deputy reportedly heard the sound of several dogs barking incessantly from inside the man’s Hunt Street home at about 10 p.m.
Feb. 15: A San Juan Island woman who failed to pay court-ordered fines turned herself in after a warrant was issued for her arrest. The 22-year-old, who arrived at department headquarters to surrender at 7 a.m., has reportedly been unemployed and lacks the money to pay fines from a prior DUI conviction.
• A San Juan Island man claims $2,500 worth of tools disappeared from his disabled SUV in an apparent theft. The man left the vehicle, with tools inside, in the parking lot of a Friday Harbor bank because of engine troubles. When he returned three days later, the tools were reportedly gone.
• A San Juan Island boy accused of shoplifting at a Friday Harbor toy store was arrested for theft. The 8-year-old, who was taken into custody shortly before 6 p.m., was later released to a parent.
Feb. 16: An Orcas Island man claims that a couple who had been living in a cabin on the same Deer Harbor property where he lives stole his dog and left the island unexpectedly. The 46-year-old believes the couple, who lived in the cabin for about a month, are en route to California with six dogs in their van, including “Buck,” described as a short-haired black and brown mixed breed, with a mangled ear and teeth missing. The couple’s van reportedly has Nevada plates.
• Accusations of assault prompted the arrest of a San Juan Island man who allegedly harassed and then struck a woman who lives at the same Friday Harbor apartments as he. The 29-year-old, who reportedly suffers from a mental health ailment, was taken into custody at his family’s Tucker Avenue apartment shortly before 5 p.m. He had recently been arrested for disorderly contact and was under court-ordered release conditions at the time of the alleged altercation.
• Unpaid fines from a prior felony drug conviction prompted the arrest of a former San Juan Island who returned to the island after being deported. The 42-year-old, convicted six years ago of selling cocaine, was taken into custody outside the medical center in Friday Harbor at about 1:30 p.m. He had reportedly gone to the medical center seeking treatment for his 12-year-old son, who was ill at the time.
Feb. 21: A Lopez Island man was arrested for DUI following a single-car collision in which his 1991 Oldsmobile caught fire and was destroyed by flames. The 23-year-old, who got out of the car before it went ablaze, was treated for minor injuries at the scene. The man was traveling by himself when he reportedly lost control of the vehicle in the 700 block of Lopez Sound Road shortly after 4 p.m.
