t “Island Classic” John Willis to serve as Grand Marshal

“Celebrate the Classics” is the theme for the Chamber of Commerce’s annual community parade scheduled for Saturday, July 5 in Eastsound. “We live in a fast-paced world, one that is constantly looking for the latest and greatest trend. But there are many things we all value that have withstood the test of time, and the chamber thought the community Parade would be the perfect moment for people to celebrate their own classics,” said Lance Evans, Chamber Executive Director.

“Of course, participation in the parade is open to any Orcas group,” said Evans, “but we particularly hope that Orcas families, made up of young and old, will want to participate this year. The theme is one that can take on different meanings for different groups, be it classic music, classic cars, or even a classic family.”

Once again, this year the Chamber of Commerce is offering a $100 gift certificate for the entry that most uniquely captures the theme of the parade. Visitors and residents alike are invited to enjoy the parade as it progresses south on North Beach Road towards Main Street in Eastsound. It all starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 5.

The Chamber also announced that a true “Orcas Classic,” John Willis, would serve as Grand Marshal of the parade. “John and his family have been an integral part of our community for years,” noted Chamber President Ken Speck.

“The Willis family has roots on Orcas dating back to 1886 and they have played a significant role in our island’s history. We are proud to recognize John as a true ‘Island Classic’ and honor his family’s accomplishments through the years.”

Willis’ life has been varied, but remained rooted to Orcas Island. John’s great-grandfather brought his family from England to Orcas Island in 1886 – with a “stop on Bainbridge Island along the way,” noted Chamber Director Evans. “As a fourth-generation islander, who lives on the family’s original property, John has seen many changes through the years. He graduated from high school in 1960 and set out to Alaska to see the world. Eight years in the Air Force followed, before a return to his Orcas roots in 1970. Now semi-retired, John devotes time to serving as a Board member of the Orcas Island Historical Museum, much as both his parents did.”

Parade entry forms are available at the Chamber office and on the Chamber website. “As the Chamber did last year,” said Evans, “we are asking for a $5 entry donation (per group regardless of number of people). One hundred percent of this donation will help pay for the fireworks display in Eastsound on Wednesday, July 4.” The entry deadline for the parade is 3 p.m. on Friday, June 27.

Also, the familiar fireworks donation cans will be located at various island merchants and spare change is appreciated to help pay for the fireworks. Donations pay about half the cost of the fireworks, with the other half paid by the Chamber of Commerce.
