“I’m really excited to explore the environment and learn more about the community,” said Samantha Alfonse, an AmeriCorps NCCC member.

The NCCC team has been working at the Four Winds Camp on Orcas Island since March 24 and will remain here until until April 24.

The Four Winds Camp provides a place for young people to experience camp lifestyle and traditions. Four Winds has a variety of programs and activities designed to develop skill and confidence through adventure in the outdoors. The camp is for boys and girls between the ages of 7-18 and is located in the San Juan Islands.

The NCCC team will be working primarily on removing an extremely invasive and non-native plant known as spurge laurel from the camp grounds. They will also assist in more general camp maintenance projects, such as re-roofing cabins, replacing benches, and fixing fences.

The AmeriCorps NCCC and its FEMA Corps units engage 2,800 young Americans in a full-time, 10-month commitment to service each year. AmeriCorps NCCC members address critical needs related to natural and other disasters, infrastructure improvement, environmental stewardship and conservation, and urban and rural development; FEMA Corps members are solely dedicated to disaster preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery work. The programs are administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service. CNCS is the federal agency that engages more than five million Americans in service through its AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, Social Innovation Fund and Volunteer Generation Fund programs, and leads President’s national call to service initiative, United We Serve.
