The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the following calls.

Aug. 6

• A San Juan deputy responded to a request for an agency assist. The incident was investigated and is ongoing.

• A Lopez deputy responded to a report of vandalism. An individual spray-painted over a roadside sign. The sign owner did not want to hold the painter criminally responsible and decided to work it out without law enforcement involvement.

• A San Juan deputy conducted a traffic stop. The driver was issued an infraction for speeding 61 mph in a 35 mph zone and a warning for expired proof of insurance.

• A deputy on Orcas Island assisted with a sick animal call.

• A San Juan deputy observed a vehicle traveling the wrong way on Warbass Way. The driver was arrested for DUI.

Aug. 7

• A deputy on Orcas responded to an abandoned vehicle left in the roadway. The deputy was unable to contact the owner. The vehicle was impounded.

• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of vandalism. Investigation revealed this to be a case of accidental property damage.

• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of a hazardous material spill. A moderate amount of road tar had been spilled on asphalt and a grassy area. The responsible party was issued an infraction for littering under 1 cubic foot.

• An Orcas man was arrested for shoplifting from the Country Corner. He was later transported to Friday Harbor to Peace Island Hospital, where he was seen by a mental health professional.

• A Lopez deputy responded to a complaint of loose dogs on Center Road. The owner was contacted.

• San Juan deputies responded to a report of a domestic dispute on a boat. One person was arrested for assault in the second degree – domestic violence, and was booked into jail. While investigating, a deputy observed the suspect drop suspected ketamine into the water, and the container was recovered. Charges are pending analysis.

Aug. 8

• A deputy on Orcas was assigned a fraud case with no financial loss reported. The deputy sent a report to the Federal Trade Commission, Fraud Department.

• A deputy on Orcas conducted a traffic stop. The driver was issued a notice of infraction for speeding, 57 mph in a 40 mph zone.

• A Lopez deputy and Lopez Fire responded to an illegal burn call. A small brush fire started by someone experiencing mental health issues was extinguished by an employee on a neighboring farm.

• Lopez deputies responded to a non-aggravated assault call. Upon investigation, it was determined that no crime had been committed. A report was forwarded to Child Protective Services for follow-up.

Aug. 9

• A man was given a verbal warning for camping in the park adjacent to the Lopez Community Center.

• A San Juan deputy responded to an animal at large. The found dog had a severe injury from a tight shock collar. The owner was issued a criminal citation for animal cruelty in the second degree, and the dog was seized by the Sheriff’s Office, where it received veterinary care.

Aug. 10

• A San Juan deputy observed a vehicle driving the wrong way on Front Street. The driver was arrested for DUI.

• Fruit was stolen from a farmstand on Shark Reef Road on Lopez.

• A deputy on San Juan took a report of broken glass in the roadway. It was reported that this had become an almost nightly issue in the same place for a couple of weeks.

• A deputy on Orcas Island conducted a traffic stop. The driver was issued a notice of infraction for speeding, 44 mph in a 25 mph zone.

• Deputies on Orcas Island responded to a domestic dispute. Both parties had, reportedly, been assaulted. The person determined to be the primary aggressor was arrested for assault in the fourth degree – domestic violence.

• A deputy on San Juan Island received a report of a found property. A wallet was found, and it is unknown where the owner is at this time. The wallet was booked into evidence as found property.

• A deputy on San Juan Island received a report of a motorcycle collision. The driver of the motorcycle sustained injuries and was flown off-island for medical attention.

• A deputy on San Juan Island responded to a report of a domestic incident at the Port of Friday Harbor. The female half was taken into custody for unlawful imprisonment and assault in the fourth degree – domestic violence.

• A deputy on San Juan Island received a report of vandalism. Currently, there are no suspects.

• A deputy on San Juan hit a deer with a patrol vehicle, causing damage to the car. The deer ran off into the woods.

Aug. 11

• A deputy on Orcas received a report of a vandalized vehicle. A report was taken.

• A deputy on Orcas was dispatched to a single-vehicle collision on Olga Road.

• Deputies on Orcas investigated a report of squatters occupying a property. No one was located.

• A deputy on San Juan took a report of theft. An individual received an empty package in the mail, which they stated appeared to be tampered with prior to delivery.

• A Lopez resident requested a trespass warning letter for a person they didn’t want on their property.

• A deputy on San Juan Island received a report of a found property. An ID was found, and the owner was not located. The ID was booked into evidence as found property.

• A deputy on San Juan Island received a report of vandalism. This case is currently under investigation.

• A deputy on San Juan received a report of a found cell phone. It is unknown who the phone belongs to, so the phone was booked into evidence as found property.

• Lopez deputies arrested a person following a domestic violence incident.

Aug. 12

• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of theft. When confronted by the store owner with video footage, the female adamantly denied the theft. The female also went back to the store and hid the items, acting as though she had previously dropped them. A criminal citation for theft in the third degree was issued.

• A deputy on San Juan took a person into protective custody and transported them to the hospital for further care for being gravely disabled, after a designated crisis responder cleared him to leave the jail on his own.

• A Lopez Island deputy was dispatched to a report of found property. The property was collected and logged into the evidence room.

• A deputy on Orcas Island took a report of missing prescription medication.

• A deputy on San Juan received a report of an unwanted person. The deputy served the person with a trespass warning letter.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a two-vehicle non-injury collision. Both vehicles needed to be towed.
