Duplicate Bridge Every Monday at 7 p.m. at the Longhouse in Eastsound duplicate bridge. For details call 376-2797 or 376-8278.

Chess The Orcas Chess Club meets at Eastsound Library at 3:30 p.m., every Monday afternoon. Members age five to 105 with exceptions at both ends are welcome. Contact Phil Heikkinen at the library for details.

Al-Anon The Al-Anon group on Orcas meets at 7:30 p.m. in the Old Parish Hall to the right of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Al-Anon is for friends and family of alcoholics.

Open Mic The Lower Tavern has open mic night weekly starting at 7:30 p.m. Jaen Black will host the event. Everyone is welcome.

Theosophical Library Indralaya’s Theosophical Library is open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. The theosophical discussion group also meets at Indralaya from 7:30 to 9 p.m. For info call 376-4526 or email indralaya@indralaya.com.

Open Mic Pizza Night A weekly benefit at Doe Bay Resort Cafe with a different nonprofit organization chosen to benefit each month. Dinner served from 6 to 10 p.m. and the Open Mic starting between 7 and 8 p.m.

Blood pressure check-up There is a free blood pressure check-up between 10 a.m. and noon at the Orcas Island Medical Clinic. No appointment is needed.

SATURDAY

Ping Pong The Orcas Table Tennis Association plays at the Orcas Christian School gym. The table tennis games run from 6 to 8 p.m. The event is sponsored by the West Beach Resort, and there is a $2 admission charge to help pay for rental fees. For more info, call Jamey Hanse at 376-2240.

Donation drop-off Granny’s Attic sale items can be dropped off at the Orcas Senior Centers on Thursdays from noon to 3 p.m from March 12 to April 16.

Spring detox From 4 to 5 p.m. Stacy Romillah will be giving a free lecture on “Spring cleaning our bodies: how to support our bodies with an internal spring detox program” at the Ama Tara Healing and Meditation Center, Doty’s Marketplace, Suite 113.

Friday, March 20

Art show opening The public is invited to an opening reception for “Double Vision” at the Living Room Gallery from 5 to 8 p.m. David Densmore and Susan Osborn will be presenting their new artwork: Osborn will be showing photographs on handmade paper, altered and transformed into wall hangings and Densmore will show new oil paintings both plein-aire and abstract. The gallery will also be open Saturday, March 21 and the following Saturdays through April from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Living Room is at 474 North Beach Road.

Native Plant Society meeting The San Juan Chapter of the Washington Native Plant Society is coming out of dormancy! Everyone is invited to the 2009 Annual Meeting at the Orcas Hotel from 1 to 4 p.m. This is a time to discuss plans for the future and native plant projects and activities for the upcoming year. There will also be a presentation on late-winter-blooming native plants in the San Juans. Everyone is welcome to attend. Jesse Winchester in concert Singers like Patti Page, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt and Reba McIntyre have recorded his songs. People magazine compared his voice and style to James Taylor. Now Lopez Island has the chance to see one of the most prolific songwriters of the ‘70s when Jesse Winchester brings his voice, his guitar and his songwriting talents to the Lopez Community Center at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are adult $15, youth $10, and available at Paper Scissors on the Rock, Blossoms Organic Grocery, Islehaven Books, Islandale Southender, and www.lopezcenter.com

Bach concert Grace Church presents harpsichordist Hans-Jürgen Schnoor and soprano Maike Albrecht, both from Lübeck, Germany.
