Chess The Orcas Chess Club meets at Eastsound Library at 3:30 p.m., every Monday afternoon. Members age five to 105 with exceptions at both ends are welcome. Contact Phil Heikkinen at the library for details.

Al-Anon The Al-Anon group on Orcas meets at 7:30 p.m. in the Old Parish Hall to the right of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Al-Anon is for friends and family of alcoholics.

Open Mic The Lower Tavern has open mic night weekly starting at 7:30 p.m. Jaen Black will host the event. Everyone is welcome.

Theosophical Library Indralaya’s Theosophical Library is open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. The theosophical discussion group also meets at Indralaya from 7:30 to 9 p.m. For info call 376-4526 or email indralaya@indralaya.com.

Open Mic Pizza Night A weekly benefit at Doe Bay Resort Cafe with a different nonprofit organization chosen to benefit each month. Dinner served from 6 to 10 p.m. and the Open Mic starting between 7 and 8 p.m.

Blood pressure check-up There is a free blood pressure check-up between 10 a.m. and noon at the Orcas Island Medical Clinic. No appointment is needed.

SATURDAY

Ping Pong The Orcas Table Tennis Association plays at the Orcas Christian School gym. The table tennis games run from 6 to 8 p.m. The event is sponsored by the West Beach Resort, and there is a $2 admission charge to help pay for rental fees. For more info, call Jamey Hanse at 376-2240.

World music by The Klezmatics The Klezmatics will perform at Orcas Center at 7:30 p.m.

friday, feb. 27

“The Case for Planned Giving.” A presentation by Joe Cohen of the Orcas Island Community Foundation from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Eastsound Fire Hall will help clarify the importance of securing the financial future of your organization through planning giving and endowment. The event is open to all staff, trustees, volunteers, and community members. Please call OICF (376-6423) for reservations.

Mariachi Huenachi Mariachi Huenachi will perform at Orcas Center at 7:30 p.m. Traditional Mexican food will be available for purchase in Madrona Room beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Feb. 27, 28 and March 1

“Wait until Dark” The Actors Theater of Orcas Island is presenting six performances of “Wait Until Dark.” Performances are on Friday, Feb. 27, Saturday, Feb. 28 and Sunday, March 1. Tickets are $10. All performances are at the Grange at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at Darvill’s Bookstore and at the door.

American Legion 30th annual Salmon Derby The derby is on Saturday, Feb. 28 and Sunday, March 1. Entry fee is $50. The community is invited to visit the American Legion and check on the status of the fishing derby. On Saturday, Feb. 28 they will be serving spaghetti dinner, which includes French bread, green salad, and homemade cake for $8. The public is invited to attend the Friday and Sunday night dinners in the main hall. Friday’s menu is burgers, cheeseburgers, chicken burgers, pasta salad, potato salad, and chips for $7 and Sunday is chili night with all the fixings and rolls for $7.

Saturday, February 28 & March 7

Drawing for the Uncertain Artist This Saturday and next Caroline Buchanan will teach at the Senior Center. The class teaches hand and eye coordination with contour drawing, how to change three-dimensions to two and how to “see as an artist.” The classes are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a break for lunch. Contact 376-5509 with questions and to learn about needed supplies. Call the Center at 376-2677 to register.

Sunday, March 1

Music, Music, Music The Music Advocacy Group (MAG) will present Music, Music, Music! with the help of The Orcas Choral Society directed by Catherine Pederson, The Community Band directed by Joe Babcock, Island Sinfonia directed by Lizz Hanks and the Fifth and Sixth Grade Strings and Choir directed by Pamela Wright. The concert will be start at 3 p.m. in the Old School Gym. A reception will be held in the cafeteria following the performance.

STITCH Lunch Meeting There will be a STITCH lunch for all women living in Orcas Village (98280 zip code) from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at Jean Henson’s house. Call 376-3251 for information and directions.

Sunday, March 15

Babysitting clinic There will be a babysitting clinic for girls and boys grades six and up from 10 to 3 p.m. at the Orcas Fire Hall meeting room. Margie Sabine will provide the basics of babysitting presented by the Red Cross. Each participant will receive a babysitting certificate and be placed on a community babysitters list if they wish. Participants are encouraged to bring ideas for games, recipes, and fun activities for babysitting. The cost is $20 and space is limited to 16. The clinic is sponsored by the Orcas Island Recreation Program. Call 376-5339 to register.

LOPEZ

SATURDAY, Feb. 28

Puppet show Puppets on the Rock proudly presents “The Adventures of Sinbad” by Oregon Shadow Theatre at 2 p.m. at the Lopez Center. After taking Lopez audiences to Italy in November and to China in January, they continue with their tour around the world through puppet theater with this tale from Persia. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for youth and are available in advance at Blossom Organic Grocery and Islehaven Books.
