Two upcoming events at Orcas Library

Two events are coming up at the library on Oct. 28:

‘Great Decisions’ discussion group

Monday, Oct. 28, 6 p.m. at the Orcas Library. Today, no countries have open borders. Every state in today’s global system has its own laws and policies about who is permitted to cross its borders, and how they will do so. Who determines whether someone is a refugee or a migrant? How have different countries, including the United States, reacted to migration? How effective are the international laws, policies, and organizations that have evolved to assist and protect refugees and migrants? A limited amount of the series briefing books are available at the Orcas Library for $10. There is also a copy available for use only in the library. Join America’s largest discussion series and be part of a nation-wide, non-partisan program intended to broaden public understanding and involvement in foreign affairs by investigating a range of contemporary foreign and domestic policy issues. Sponsored by Friends of the Orcas Island Library. For more information visit the Library’s website www.orcaslibrary.org.

Writing Our History

Monday, Oct. 28 at 11:30 a.m. at the Orcas Library. Do you have an interest in Orcas Island history? Are you curious about a pioneering Orcas Island family’s history? Or a desire to preserve the local history of long-time island businesses like Templin’s General Store or Island Hardware and Supply? Then you will want to attend the meeting of the local Writing Our History Project where your interest, research and writing could have a place in History Links, the free online encyclopedia of Washington state history. History Link provides an online repository for stories or essays about Washington state, including Orcas Island local history. Personal memoirs and reminiscences that relate to state history are an important window onto our past and are preserved in the website’s “People’s History.”

History Link Senior Editor Kit Oldham will be attending to answer any questions about History Link and publishing on the www.historylink.org website. Please come to find out more about preserving local history, or whether your research and writing might find an enthusiastic audience among History Link readers. This event is co-sponsored by the Orcas Island Historical Museum and the Orcas Island Genealogy Club. For more information visit the Library’s website www.orcaslibrary.org.
