All are invited to a free community showing of “The Janes” on Thursday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m. hosted by Island Reproductive Health Initiative.
This award-winning documentary tells the story of a group of ordinary women in pre-Roe v. Wade Chicago who came together and organized in secret to provide safe abortion care when it was against the law. Facing pressure from the state, the church and even organized crime, “The Janes” showed how grassroots action can save lives and change history.
This film feels especially timely, as questions of reproductive rights continue to be a hot topic in today’s political climate, and the threat of state-level budget cuts puts an even bigger strain on accessing services. IRHI hopes the screening will spark thoughtful conversation about the importance of reproductive justice, access to care and the true power that can be found in collective resistance and action.
The event is free and open to all. IRHI will also have resources and information available in the lobby for anyone interested in learning more about local services.
