‘Sailing the Northwest Passage’ lecture

Jerry von Gohren is an ocean sailor with Orcas Island family connections.

On Sunday, March 20 at 2:30 p.m. at the Orcas Senior Center, he will be presenting a visual program of the 2007 voyage of the sailing ship “Cloud 9,” as it transited the fabled and difficult Northwest Passage around the top of Canada.

The 72-day voyage from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Kodiak, Ala. skirted the west coast of Greenland before making icy passages through Baffin, Victoria and other islands of Northern Canada, thence out into Alaska’s Arctic Ocean.

“You will see the spectacular scenery of one of the most isolated and hostile regions of the world. Don’t miss this unique opportunity!” say organizers.

The event is sponsored by Orcas Island Historical Museum. Admission is by donation.
