Recycled fashion workshops at Orcas Center

The Visual Arts Committee of Orcas Center and The Exchange are coming together to celebrate creative recycling on Orcas Island this fall! Orcas Center will kick things off with a community show on September 1 welcoming wall art, 3-dimensional work, and wearable fashion made from discarded or found materials and The Exchange’s Trashion Fashion Show returns to The Grange on September 16.

Two workshops will be offered at Orcas Center before the Art Opening and Fashion Show to help with ideas, provide the opportunity to collaborate with others and offer available supplies (including sewing machines). Workshops are free, open to all ages, and will take place at Orcas Center’s Workshop on Tuesday, August 22nd from 4 – 7 p.m. and Saturday, August 26th from Noon – 4 p.m. For more information contact Zoe at vac@orcascenter.org.

‘The Art of Recycling’ Opening Reception is on Friday, September 1 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and will feature a fashion show for wearable creations. To participate with 2D and 3D (non-wearable) art simply come to intake day on Wednesday, August 30 from 10:15 a.m. – 12 p.m. to drop off your work for installation. All community members are welcome! Designers and models who wish to participate in the fashion show should contact Zoe & Marjorie at vac@orcascenter.org.

The Exchange’s annual ‘Trashion Fashion Show’ will return on September 16 at The Grange. Come celebrate the death of fast fashion with a runway show at 3 p.m. Grace McCune will emcee the event and DJ Bodhicypha will provide catwalk-worthy jams. Outfits should be created using recycled, reclaimed, and found materials. To participate, contact Asifa at asifa@exchangeorcas.org.
