Permaculture at Orcas Christian School

Submitted by Orcas Christian School.

We have worms in class – red wigglers, to be precise – and they are teaching kids (and teachers) how to close the loop on the food waste stream. The permaculture and sustainability program at Orcas Christian School held a vermiculture class for kids kindergarten through sixth grade on March 5. Each class learned the function of worms in ecology, and how they process organic material into compost, a valuable soil amendment for the garden. It concluded with students constructing their own classroom worm bins. Next up, students and staff will be sheet mulching the soccer field to prepare beds for the crop gardens. There is also a public workshop for it: https://www.selfsustenance.com/events/lawn-to-garden-series-sheet-mulching-workshop.
