Spirit Eagle’s exhibit, “Messages and Impressions from the Higher Realms,” will be shown at Islander’s Bank in Eastsound throughout the month of May. An artist’s reception is scheduled for Friday, May 2, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the bank’s lobby. Refreshments will be served. The public is encouraged to attend.
The Island Inspiration All-Stars will perform twice on Saturday, May 3 at the Orcas Center. The All-Stars, 30 dancers strong, are island kids who are taught by Anthony Manuel. The performances will showcase 14 new dances. Showtimes are 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10, and may be purchased at the Box Office, or call 376-2281.
Paul Johnson, of the University of Washington School of Oceanography, will be speaking on sponge reefs on Wednesday, May 7 at the Orcas Senior Center as part of San Juan Nature Institute’s Orcas Island Spring Lecture Series.
The art of Richard Haffey will be featured in the Lundeen Room of the Orcas Senior Center during the month of May.
The Hearts and Hands volunteer caregiver organization and the Orcas Senior Center announce the next speaker in their “Reflections” series to be held May 9 and 10 at the Orcas Senior Center.
Observing intently, taking risks with the possibility of failure, recognizing patterns, making connections, and not playing it safe are all lessons learned in artwork.

Orcas Islanders have been requesting another big musical and here it is! this magical, magnificent event has attracted many an islander as cast, musician, technician, set builder, lighting expert, costumer and hairdresser,all to create a musical extravaganza of the beloved Disney classic “Beauty and the Beast.” Now all that’s needed is an audience, and from opening night on, there will be a stampede to the Box Office to be sure no one misses this production.
Deborah Sparks says the experience of directing the musical, “Beauty and the Beast,” has been “Wonderful, with people giving whatever they can, they’ve made it fun and when the curtain opens, and people see the costumes – oh my gosh!”
“Join the circle of knowledge @ your library!” is the theme of National Library Week April 13-19. The Orcas and Lopez public and school libraries are celebrating all month long with readings storytelling, lectures, movies and more.
Ruthie Newman will be giving a series of eight art history seminars starting April 10 in the Orcas Library meeting room. The course will be entitled, “The Floating World Meets the West: Arts and Crafts of Japan and China, and Their Effects on Western Perceptions of the World.”
Visiting Poet Joseph Green will offer a poetry reading for the community at the Orcas Library on Friday, April 18 at 7:00. This event is supported by the Library and Friends of the Library.
Orcas Island teenager Oliver Aldort was one of the two top medalists at the Seattle Young Artist Music Festival held March 23-29. The week long competitions draws from the Northwestern states and Canada. The 14-year-old won at the senior level competing against students 14 to 19 years of age.
