Susan Slapin’s works will be featured at the Hotwall at Orcas Artworks during the month of June.
The Ian McFeron Band from Seattle will entertain at the Lopez Grange Hall on Friday, June 6 at 7:30 p.m.
The Orcas Community Band, made up of 40 musicians ranging in ages from 15 to 88 “isn’t just a bunch of funky-sounding, old white-haired people, but an exhilarating, fun-filled and very musically competent ensemble,” says Band secretary Karen Speck. “We play light pop music that is enjoyable to listen to.”

Volunteers who would like to work as a lighting operator or stage manager during Orcas Center’s third annual Kids’ Fest can get themselves or kids in free for performances on Memorial Day weekend.
Orcas Open Arts’ Student Art Forum sponsored its first “Art Bus” on Saturday, May 10. Fifteen students and chaperones boarded the bus for Seattle on Saturday morning to spend the day seeing “Roman Art of the Louvre” at the Seattle Art Museum and visiting the Catherine Person Gallery for a show of ceramic sculpture by Orcas artist Hannah Alex Glasser. Orcas Open Arts plans to develop the “Art Bus” program to include several art-related field trips for Orcas High School Students during the 2008-09 school year.
Orcas Center hosts the Third Annual Memorial Day Kids’ Fest, a series of five rousing performances that have been selected especially for Orcas children and family audiences. Adventurous adults will also enjoy these events, which include a dance concert, puppet theatre, talent show, magic and rock music. No ticket is more than $8.
Six years after moving into its location on Henry Road near “Church Corner,” the Orcas Island Senior Center is going stronger than ever. Not only do Foot Care and Senior Lunch continue to be popular and well attended, additional activities have been steadily added to the program.
A free public talk with Buddhist Monk Kelsang Norbu, “The Secret Lives of Happy People,” will take place Saturday, May 17, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Orcas Island Public Library.
The May meeting of the Orcas Island Garden Club will be held Wednesday, May 21, at 10 a.m. at the Orcas Center in Eastsound. Guest speaker will be Dr. Craig Cogger, Ph.D., a research soil scientist at Washington State University in Puyallup. Cogger encourages attendees to bring a soil sample from their garden sites – two handfuls – for texture analysis.
Fleischer Art Photography will be exhibiting at Washington Federal Savings Bank for the month of May. John and Susan Fleischer, who are primarily wedding and portrait photographers, will exhibit various pieces from weddings as well as a few of astrophotography images and their barn.
Orcas Island Prevention Partnership (OIPP) invites the Orcas Island community to a magical evening with Swil Kanim, violinist and story teller extraordinaire. Swil will perform at the Partnership’s Annual Membership meeting Monday, May 19 at 7 p.m. at the Orcas Senor Center. OIPP Director Moriah Armstrong said, “Through his music and stories Swil Kanim speaks from the heart about honoring self and community. He encourages all to connect to their own sense of honor and integrity, especially when it comes to caring well for self and others. Orcas has been extremely fortunate to have Swil perform at the Orcas Island Schools last fall and most recently at the Odd Fellows, so if you missed him or want to hear more, here is your chance!”
