Orcas Island Jazz Festival and Student Workshop Labor Day Weekend

Martin Lund’s fifth annual Orcas Island Jazz Festival will light up Orcas Center over Labor Day weekend.

Tickets are on sale now at www.OrcasCenter.org for three nights of jazz, from Friday, Aug. 30, through Sunday, Sept. 1. Select your favorite shows, or get a three-day pass to all shows for $75. All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. In past years all nights of the Jazz Festival have soldout.

New this year are Sunday afternoon workshops with Brazilian master pianist, composer and three-time Latin Grammy nominee Jovino Santos Neto and exuberant drummer/percussionist, composer and educator Jeff Busch.

The Sept. 1 workshops are free of charge and open to people of all ages, but students are especially encouraged to participate, and registration is required. The workshops will be held at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church Parish Hall.

To register for the piano workshop (2 — 3:15 p.m.) with Santos Neto, go to: http://oijfpianoworkshop.rsvpify.com.

To register for the percussion workshop (3:30 — 4:45 p.m.) go to: http://oijfpercussionworkshop.rsvpify.com.

“Don’t miss out on this opportunity to get one-on-one guidance from two jazz greats!” say organizers.

This year’s festival will feature Pearl Django and guest artist Gail Pettis on Friday night, Martin Lund and the Off-Island All-Stars on Saturday night and Jovino Santos Neto Quinteto on Sunday night. (Get there early on Sunday for a preconcert talk by Santos Neto starting at 6:45 p.m.)
