Orcas Center Presents “The Cake” in the Black Box Theatre

Submitted by Orcas Center.

For the first time since COVID, Orcas Center opens the Black Box doors for The Cake, a play by Bekah Brunstetter directed by Melinda Milligan and stars an all-local cast: Lisa Spesard as Della, Travis King as Tim, Claire Orser as Jen, Sofia Poe as Macy and Yotam Zohar as the voice of George.

In “The Cake,” we meet Della, a proud baker who makes cakes not judgement calls — those she leaves to her husband, Tim. But when the young woman she helped raise comes back home to North Carolina to get married, and the fiancé is actually a fiancée, Della’s life gets turned upside down. She can’t really make a cake for such a wedding, can she? For the first time in her life, Della has to think for herself.

While there will be many prop cakes on display, each night there is a special “featured” cake that was masterfully created by an Orcas Island baker. Join us after the show for a reception highlighting these culinary treats from Mary and Ron at The Orcas Store, Beth Smith, Michelle Reed, Kate Johnson, Rachel Taylor, Lisa Murphy, Helen Huber, and Marilyn Andrews. Many thanks to all of our baking artists for helping us create such a special show!

Performances run Sept. 15-23, with a matinee on Sunday, Sept. 18. PThe Black Box Theatre at Orcas Center has limited seating, so there are only 40 tickets available each night. Tickets range from $15-$47 and are available at www.OrcasCenter.org, or by calling 360-376-2281 x 1. Parental Guidance suggested due to strong language and adult themes. Masking is required.
