Orcas Island life coach and workshop leader Dr. Rosie Kuhn has published a new book called “The Unholy Path of a Reluctant Adventurer.”

She will read from her memoir, which is an account of her spiritual journey, at Darvill’s Book Store on Thursday, July 7 at 6 p.m.

The book is an autobiographical account of Kuhn’s life choices that took her further away from the conventional path as a wife and mother and into an adventurer of the soul, bringing her closer to her “own essential truth” and a life far more fulfilling than she ever imagined.

“The Unholy Path of a Reluctant Adventurer” was imagined when Kuhn was in her early 30s, having ended her marriage and chosen to leave her children in the care of their father. In order to be a more effective mom, she knew she needed to grow up and hoped that her children would then want to live with her. Kuhn crossed the Atlantic Ocean on a 93-foot schooner, sailed all along the eastern seaboard, acquired three master’s degrees and a Ph.D. Her doctoral dissertation examined the lives of trans-oceanic sailors like herself.

From her experiences and studies, Kuhn has written a book in which she honestly shares what it was like to have made such choices.

“Not in a million years would I dream up such a life for myself,” Kuhn said. “As a child, all I ever imagined was that I would get married as early as possible, have children and live happily ever after; end of story. Someone – I don’t know who – must have put a curse on me, the one that says, ‘May you have an interesting life.’ Why else would a good Catholic girl end up having a life like this? What happened to my dream of being a happy mom and playing with my children?”

Kuhn published her first book, “Self-Empowerment 101,” in 2007. She has lived on Orcas for more than eight years. She travels extensively between Washington and California for speaking engagements and appearances at book signings and to teach.
