Painting party

Thanks to an Orcas Island Community Foundation grant, Orcas Center has funding to paint the exterior of its building. A “painting party” weekend is scheduled for July 12-14. Sign up for a four-hour shift (or more!) and join in on the fun with food and drinks provided. To sign up for a slot, visit http://orcascenter.org/event/painting-party/2019-07-12/.

Free classes on Qlab

Orcas Center technical director Jake Perrine will be offering three free introductory classes on the amazing MacOS show-control program Qlab (figure53.com), which the center now uses.

If you’ve ever wanted to learn about designing sound, video or lighting for performance, this is a great introduction. Each class will stand alone — you can choose which ones you want to attend — but all the topics interrelate, so come to all three for the deepest learning.

No signup required – just show up at the appointed time. Although optional, the best way to enjoy and participate in these classes is to bring your own Mac laptop with the free version of Qlab installed. Demo audio and video files will be made available to experiment with during the classes, which are as follows:

• Tuesday, June 18, 6-7:30 p.m. – Center Stage – Audio in Qlab – audio, mic, loop and fade cues. Cueing sound FX and music files. Multispeaker sound designs.

• Tuesday, June 25, 6-7:30 p.m. – Center Stage – Visuals in Qlab – video, text, fade, camera cues. Projectors and surfaces. Slide shows.

• Tuesday, July 2, 6-7:30 p.m. – Center Stage – Lighting in Qlab – light cues. Controlling dimmers and LED fixtures. Building a show versus busking. Cueing to music. Using a MIDI controller for faders. Questions: email jake@orcascenter.org.
