Mt. Constitution botany class offered

Instructor, biologist and author Thor Hansen is offering “Botany of Mount Constitution II – The Summits” on June 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is no prerequisite for the class, as was previously reported.

The class will explore and identify the unusual shrubs, trees, and wildflowers of the high country, starting at the summit and following the trail down approximately two miles to Little Summit.

Rising 2,409 feet above sea level, Mount Constitution is the highest point in the San Juan Islands and home to the widest variety of plant communities in the county. Its forests, rocky meadows, and wetlands harbor many rare species including Indian’s dream fern, showy polemonium, spreading dogbane, mistletoe, wintergreen and hairy manzanita.

Attendees will meet at the Summit parking lot at 10 a.m. to be shuttled to Little Summit for the hike down. The cost is $35 and participants should wear hiking shoes and bring rain gear, lunch, water bottle, hat, sunscreen, field guides, hand lens and binoculars. The level of activity will be moderate. To register for the class, call 378-3646.
