Local writers and international improvisers explore encounters with art

Art, like beauty, is often in the eye of the beholder. Orcas Center’s 2009 Monologue Night, on Friday, June 12, will feature ruminations about art written by local writers. It’s a collaboration of local actors, a team of international improvisational actors and writers who will spend a week on Orcas Island together.

Local writers participating in the evening include: Jennifer Brennock, Jim McKeon, Elsie McFarland, Bill Westlake, Michele Griskey, Louise Carnachan, Howard Barbour, Marguerite Olson, Deborah Sparks, Antoinette Botsford, Jill Johnson, MollyBee Welkin, Steve Henigson and Jaen Black, many of whom will read their monologues. Sukima Hampton and Freddy Hinkle will read works by others.

Returning to the island for the third year, the actors, including Seattle-based Unexpected Productions and Randy Dixon, a part-time Orcas resident have created energy filled evenings in the past.

Monologue Night will be held on Friday, June 12 at 7:30 p.m. on the OffCenter Stage. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at www.orcascenter.org or 376-2281 ext. 1 or at the Orcas Center box office, Thursday to Saturday, noon to 4 p.m.
