The Kiwanis Club of Orcas Island is extending the application date for their Kiwanis Continuing Education Award. The award is to be given to an Orcas Island resident to help defray costs in furthering additional schooling. While the award has no upper or lower age requirements, it is an attempt to help someone attain a higher level of learning and training. The $800 grant recipient will be announced in June. Applying for the award is a simple: a one-page narrative telling about yourself, your reason for continuing your education, and how you anticipate spending the money. The $800 may be used for tuition, child care, transportation, books or other expenses. Applications are due July 8, and should be sent to Velma Doty, PO Box 1375, Eastsound, WA 98245.
All of the money was raised from the generosity of island residents through OICG Christmas grant catalog. The Kiwanis Club also does several fundraising events from the pancake breakfast to the paper airplane contest.
