Representatives from Global Sumud Flotilla and Orcas Island’s Palestinian Activist Group will give a free community presentation on Wednesday, Nov. 12 in the Madrona Room at Orcas Center.
The flotilla was a coalition of boats that attempted to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza. Coordinated by 460 activists from over 40 countries, the flotilla aimed to dismantle what organizers term Israel’s illegal blockade, create a humanitarian corridor and deliver aid directly to Gaza’s shores.
The flotilla was intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters on Oct. 1. Orcas Islander Jasmine Ikeda was among those detained. They and 20 other Americans were released from Israeli custody on Oct. 7. Ikeda returned to Orcas a week later.
Doors open at 6 p.m., food will be served until 6:45 p.m. At 7 p.m., Ikeda will speak about their experiences on the flotilla and members of the Orcas Palestinian Activist Group will discuss local efforts. Afterwards, attendees can enjoy a dessert break and will have time to ask questions of the presenters.
