Flamenco performance: cancelled

From Orcas Center:

We regret that we have to cancel Saturday’s performance of Flamenco Rosario because we were unable to secure USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) approval of work visas for the artists, all of whom are Canadian nationals. We deeply regret that our community will not be able to experience the performance by this outstanding troupe.

Ticket holders please contact the Box Office for your refund, 376-2281, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, noon – 4 pm.

Orcas Center presents Flamenco Rosario performing Flamenco Ayer Y Hoy (Flamenco Yesterday and Today) on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m.

The visiting artists will also present two flamenco workshops – dance and guitar – simultaneously at 10 a.m. that same day.

Flamenco Rosario, based in Vancouver, BC, is directed by Rosario Ancer, one of the most respected flamenco artists in Western Canada, and Victor Kolstee, acclaimed guitarist. Along with their company members of dancers and a singer, Ancer and Kolstee perform to sold-out houses throughout Canada, and last month they toured to Mexico.

Flamenco is a collaborative art form between dancer, guitarist and singer, and it has evolved over the past century and a half. In its early years, flamenco was family entertainment shared by all, danced at social gatherings and in cafes, in the Analucia part of Southern Spain. While it continues in this informal context, flamenco has also become a more formal performance form that is now enjoyed on stages around the world, with intricate lighting, costumes and staging. Flamenco Ayer Y Hoy presents this history in a performance with music, voice (cante) and five dancers.

Tickets to Flamenco Ayer Y Hoy are $25, $17 for Orcas Center members and $11 for students. However, the cost of tickets should not be a deterrent for low-income families and individuals who wish to attend the flamenco performance, as Orcas Center has a fund for free and discount tickets for such community members. For more information or tickets, visit orcascenter.org or call or 376-2281 ext 1 or visit Orcas Center during box office hours, Thursday-Saturday, noon to 4 p.m.

Flamenco classes

The directors of Flamenco Rosario are also teachers, offering classes through their Centro Flamenco, a popular dance studio in Vancouver. While on Orcas, Rosario Ancer will teach basic flamenco dance, and Victor Kolstee will teach flamenco guitar. These workshops will be offered simultaneously from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, and participants will come together for the last 15 minutes to create flamenco! Tuition for the workshops is $15.
