Charlie Groth, Carl Allen to perform

Charlie Groth, a folk troubadour who has traveled all the way from Jacksonville, Fla., will entertain at the Orcas Grange on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m.

Groth is an accomplished musician known for his easy-going, intimate, and positive on-stage manner. He plays Western swing (Bob Wills and Hank Penn), ragtime (Fats Waller, Eubie Blake and Louis Armstrong), Texas country (Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson), folk (Tom Paxton, Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot) and blues (Gary Davis, Leadbelly), plus some of his own original songs. Groth plays guitar and mandolin in styles ranging from vintage jazz and swing, to Piedmont-style blues, to Doc Watson-style flatpicking, to old-time/traditional folk music.

Carl Allen of the Wanderers will open Groth’s show. Allen is an old-time folk singer, best known for his repertoire and impersonations of Woody Guthrie. He performed in June for the Orcas Museum’s Journey Stories event series.

Admission to the concert is $12. If you can’t catch their show Saturday, they will only be a ferry ride away on Sunday, Sept. 19 when they play at 2 p.m. at the Shaw Island Community Center.
