Submitted by Orcas Island Library.

Rosalys Peel will speak on Aug. 19 at 6 p.m. at the Orcas Library and by Zoom. Register at this link to attend by Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZckceGppjssE9Oq0aPaJwvwdGxIDeACsQHt

Peel, author and narrator of “Mike & Me,” will discuss “living with, rather than dying from, Alzheimer’s.” The book is an Indie Award-Winning guide for Alzheimer’s couples, families and caregivers and is based on Peel’s experience and journal notes during her husband’s nine years of illness. Peel is a registered nurse, a certified couples relationship facilitator, and remains a tireless writer and speaker in the national fight against Alzheimer’s. She has been featured on NPR and the Today Show. Peel lives on Bainbridge Island near her children and grandchildren. Books will be available for sale.

Join Orcas Island resident Susan Slapin, artist, painter, and poet for a poetry reading from her new book on Saturday, Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. on the south lawn of the library. Her work has been exhibited from Orcas to Ojai, and has been recognized by The Oregonian for Printmaking and by the Lake Oswego Festival of The Arts for Etching and Monoprint.

“Painted Bird: Painted Skies and Pastel Poems,” is an art collector and poetry lover’s book of 44 pages. Some are short poems and some long, yet each contains inquiry, curiosity, and contemplation. Nature holds a place through dreamscapes, metaphoric, and stream of consciousness writing.

The Bookmobile will be at the Deer Harbor Marina on Sunday, Aug. 22 from 12 to 3 p.m.

The library is coming to you! Stop by and browse new kid and adult books, games, DVDs, and magazines, and then check out the ones you like! Don’t have a library card? You can get one at the bookmobile! There’s a book drop at the Deer Harbor Community Center when you’re done with your summer reads.
