Featured writer Kakwasi Somadhi will start off the first Artsmith salon and writers’ open mic of the season on Monday, Oct. 3 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Kangaroo House Bed and Breakfast.

“Kakwasi is not only a talented, sensitive observer of human relationships, but she is also a person who inspires creativity in everyone around her,” volunteer organizer Jennifer Brennock said. “She’s just an incredibly gentle person, but her life story will stop you in your tracks.”

Thirty-one years after receiving her first master’s degree, Somadhi returned to school to earn an MFA in creative writing. There she completed her first novel, “Coming Forth by Day.” Currently, she is at work on a collection of stories, “Sun Tzu in the Hood,” and a memoir, “Spirit Rapping through the Vines.” Somadhi teaches at Sacramento City College and conducts writing workshops.
