Families and young anglers, get ready for a day of outdoor fun and community spirit as the Annual Bill Yarlott Youth Fishing Derby returns to Cascade Lake on Saturday, April 26 — complete with a free pancake breakfast to kick off the festivities.
This cherished island tradition invites children 13 and under to cast their lines at daybreak for a chance to reel in the catch of the day. The derby isn’t just about fishing — it’s about creating memories, learning new skills and celebrating the joy of being outdoors together.
Starting at 9 a.m., families are welcome to gather at the Cascade Lake Day Use Shelter for a hearty, complimentary pancake breakfast. Then at 11 a.m., the action heats up with the official weigh-in and prize ceremony, where young anglers can showcase their catches. Prizes will be awarded for various categories, including Biggest Fish, Best Sportsmanship and more. A cozy fire will be blazing at the shelter to keep everyone warm and cheerful.
“We’re thrilled to bring back the pancake breakfast and the Bill Yarlott Youth Fishing Derby again this year,” said Fiona Stone, one of the event organizers. “It’s such a special opportunity for families to connect, explore nature, and enjoy time together.”
The event also includes the Jeffrey Pyne Free Fishing Weekend, where kids in need can receive free fishing poles and tackle, available while supplies last.
No registration is required. Just show up with your fishing gear (or pick up some on-site), and don’t forget to bring your catch to the shelter by 11 a.m. for photos, measuring, pancakes and prizes.
