I was a little surprised to read the VRBO rebuke about the San Juans. Since it is a new year, I thought I would offer a new perspective on the issue.
We have rented our house out in the past from VRBO and it was always a pleasant experience for us and for the families that rented our house. We have many kind notes from people who were thrilled to get a taste of island life. These people shopped locally, ate out, took boat trips, whale watched at Lime Kiln Park and then went home to whereever.
Some people like to travel in the summer and avoid the tourists; why not rent your house out and pay for your trip? I met a widow who used to rent her house out every summer and move aboard her boat and go cruising; not a bad lifestyle. So whether you want to travel or could just use a little extra income, maybe consider getting a Vacation Rental Permit from the county.
Be nice to strangers and fellow travelers, and if you have not tried it book a VRBO on your next vacation, it’s a great way to get a feel for the town or city you’re visiting. Happy New Year!
