Those who give blood are heroes | Letter

I was so encouraged to see that 82 people took time out of their busy day to give blood on Orcas last Thursday. They are all a hero and I count them as putting their blood where their heart is in helping others. There is much of talk about helping others on Orcas. Giving blood is just one of the many ways we can show our caring spirit. And it is real.

I don’t disrespect others for not giving. I’m just proud to say I made the effort, as did 81 others. I know some can’t give for medical reasons. All the more reason it is important for we who can – do.

It was amazing to me that fewer (70?) gave on San Juan Island. Why is that? Multiple the population of Orcas Island and they give less? Can’t figure that out. I overheard someone tell another donor that folks back at their work place didn’t want them to “do it.” Can’t figure that out either. Hey, business owners. Put your money where your heart is. Let employees give blood on the clock. And give them a cookie and juice break to boot. If you think it is inconvenient to give blood, think how inconvenient it is to need a transfusion. I hope you never have to, but my blood, or another hero’s, will be there if you do.

I laugh at those screening questions they ask. I sometimes think I lead a boring life. But then those folks needing my blood are probably happy I do. More power to em and let the love flow!

Thanks heroes. See ya in eight weeks!!
