Thanks for making DH post office happen | Letter

It is a win-win situation when you can combine having a good time and raising money.

It is a win-win situation when you can combine having a good time and raising money.

The wine tasting event hosted by the Deer Harbor Community Club in August was very successful, thanks to the generosity of several businesses and many helping hands.  The proceeds of $10,300 will help reduce the mortgage on the post office building that was purchased two years ago. Due to federal cutbacks, the Deer Harbor post office was slated for closure along with hundreds of other rural post offices. With the promise of a 10-year lease from the federal government, the community banded together to raise sufficient funds for a down payment and then obtained a mortgage.

The following businesses deserve special thanks for their donations: Mark and Irene McKinley of The Wine Store, Country Corner Cellars; Pam and Craig Carpenter of The Deer Harbor Inn; Becky Smith of Wyndham Development Company; The Resort at Deer Harbor; Richard and Nanae Fralick of King Fish Inn and the West Sound Café; Don and Denise Wilk of Orcas Island Eclipse Charters; Tom Averna of Deer Harbor Charters; Michael Durland and Kat Fennell of Deer Harbor Boatworks; Erik and Pam Smith of Cayou Quay Marina; Peter Fromm of The Gallery, and the Deer Harbor Marina.

Once again we have shown what can be accomplished when a community comes together to achieve a common goal. Thank you to everyone who gave so generously of their time, talent and resources.
