Sheriff Nou: ‘Vote yes for Orcas Park and Rec’ | Letter

Who hasn’t heard kids and teens complain “I’m bored. There’s nothing to do”? Orcas voters have the opportunity to constructively address that by voting to pass the Orcas Parks and Recreation operation levy on the Feb. 8 ballot. This levy received over 58% yes votes in November, but failed to reach the 60% supermajority required to pass a funding measure, a gap of less than 40 votes.

Having supervised and organized activities for youth is vital to the community from a number of perspectives. They provide an additional measure of prevention to reduce the opportunity for kids to engage in criminal behaviors. They provide healthy alternatives to alcohol and drug abuse. They provide an opportunity to expand the “safety net” by developing positive relationships with other kids and adults in the community. Parks and Rec programs allow coaching and mentoring opportunities and contribute to strengthen the fabric of the community.

For less than the price of a latte every month, Orcas Island can fund these vital programs that serve not only youth, but all on Orcas Island who choose to participate. I endorse this levy before you, and encourage you to vote yes for Orcas Park and Rec.
