In response to the questions “What is Happening to Orcas Island?” in the letter by Di Finch in the April 10 Sounder, the answer seems to be “Financialization of Housing.” This is described on a larger scale by Leilani Farha in her talk on AlternativeRadio.org.

She puts forth an alternative path to housing as a necessary human right, not a commodity or gold. She has a “Cities for Housing” declaration and description of the possible “Shift.” She recommends a film, “Push.”

We as a community need to educate ourselves. Then we can take meaningful actions on a very local level.

Together, perhaps we can change directions and save our island’s way of life.
