From under my Orcas Center Volunteer Coordinator hat, I applaud and thank the Center’s Board of Trustees for the wonderful gift they gave all the Center’s active volunteers, last Wednesday night. Reversing the usual roles, the black-tied trustees served us volunteers an astoundingly luxurious and incredibly delicious dinner, replete with four courses and two wines, silver utensils, and white napery. Two of the trustees entertained us with music and song, and the speechmaking, which came only at the end, was mercifully short. There is lots of reward in doing volunteer work, but this dinner took the cake—and then delivered it to our tables for dessert, with créme anglaise and a slice of pear. Thank you, trustees!

Comment: Tom Tillman said it best. The loss of Rosario Resort as a viable business will devastate the local economy and many of the working-class families that depend on income from the jobs the resort represents.
We are so fortunate on Orcas Island to have talented musicians, such as Martin Lund gathers together, to give us concerts like the one on Sunday the 17th. And, in this case, for free.
For the many years that Anne and I have known Richard Fralick, we have admired and respected his intelligence and many achievements as well as his dedication to our community.

We want to thank the most awesome community in the whole world. We have been awed and humbled by the many offers of help and support. If we had not had the help of you wonderful people, we never would have been able to even attempt to continue on with our daughter’s wedding and the Woodsong Music Festival.
The food was delicious, the auction items tantalizing, the auctioneers a hoot.
No question about it, the Orcas Animal Protection Society’s fundraiser on June 23 at the Orcas Hotel was a blast. More importantly, it raised a substantial amount of money for our desperately needed, superbly managed animal protection program.

I want to thank the Orcas Island Community for its participation and great support for Orcas Island Prevention Partnership’s Town Hall Meeting on Underage Drinking on March 31. We had a great turnout with over 75 community members – 20 of them teens. I feel fortunate to live in a community that cares so much about its youth and where youth are happy to come to the table and talk with adults about underage drinking. Our conversations were interesting, and I personally enjoyed myself and learned a lot. OIPP will be using the many ideas to support continued reductions in underage drinking and increase protective factors for our youth and community.
