Another reason to appreciate EMTs

Friday, of Labor Day weekend, was a day to once again appreciate the magnificent services that our EMTs provide those of us who live on Orcas Island.

Nine years ago, they responded to our call and airlifted me to St. Joseph’s where I had a quadruple bypass. So, when I experienced similar symptoms, the Orcas medical Center advised me to call 911 and let the EMTs determine the immediacy of the situation. After conferring with my physician, Dr. Giefer, who knows my medical history, it was determined that, even though I appeared okay, the best thing would be to fly me over to St, Joseph’s for a thorough evaluation and observation. Luckily, this time extensive test showed that I was “normal.” My condition had stabilized and new base-lines were established.

Looking back, I can’t help but remember the comforting skill and efficiency of the EMTs and the Northwest AirLift people. We are mighty fortunate to have these services available. They knew their work and went about it in a business-like way with broad smiles of confidence that built trust and confidence in Heidi and me.

Our heart-felt appreciation goes to those who served on the EMT team: Paramedic Patrick Shepler, Brian Schmidt, Jeff Jones, Maxx Jones, Teth Ybarra, John Howard and Dwight Guss. Each is a credit to the Orcas Island Fire and Rescue Department.
