Two island families unite to steward historic Orcas Hotel into next chapter

Two Orcas Island families are joining forces to write the next chapter in the beloved Orcas Hotel’s 120-year history.

Andrea Bearce and Chris Duty are partnering with Michael and Elizabeth Antonia to own and operate the hotel.

Both couples are five-year island residents with deep roots in the Pacific Northwest, now raising their families on Orcas. Bearce brings experience as a pastry chef and soil biology consultant, while Duty comes from tech, product management and finance.

Michael’s background in events and hospitality includes prior island restaurant experience as a partner in Monti, the Roman-inspired eatery in Eastsound, which pairs seamlessly with Elizabeth’s creative vision, honed most recently at Monti and as Creative Director of babywearing brand Ergobaby.

Together, the two families are stepping into roles as innkeepers and hosts, taking over from previous owners John and Julia, who stewarded the hotel with dedication and care.

“We know what an important hub the hotel café is for not only the community but ferry riders alike,” the partners explain. “This really is such an enchanting place, and it’s comforting to know that season after season, new people have come here for rest and inspiration. These walls have seen a lot, and each generation of innkeeper contributes a bit of the story of this iconic hotel. They see the hotel as essential to island life in an accelerating world: “We moved to the island so our children could exist surrounded by nature and, in a world of everything at your fingertips, experience a different way of life. We know the value of being face-to-face and creating meaningful connections within our community.”

With the café open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, the team (and Mr. Lily) are excited to welcome both regulars and first-time visitors with a new menu and remodeled cafe. The hotel will also feature a gift shop and wine bar, with plans to utilize the restaurant and outdoor spaces for events throughout the summer and autumn.

The combination of Bearce’s culinary expertise, Michael’s hospitality and events experience, Elizabeth’s creative direction, and Duty’s strategic operations background promises fresh energy while honoring the hotel’s historic character.

“We’re honored to serve this community and look forward to seeing you soon,” they said.
