It’s time for Orcas to say farewell to the plucky little fire pumper that saved the super ferry Elwha one dark October night in 1983.
Three Orcas high school softball players were selected for all-state teams out of Washington state’s class 2-B division.
“It’s really cool to see those girls recognized like that,” said coach Scott Harris. “These are some of the elite teams in the state; it’s some amazing company that our girls are in. The first team is just a powerhouse.”
The Orcas Island Park and Rec District is getting ready to put its popular support to the test.
Come November, voters will decide whether to fund the district. The board has proposed a levy rate of 10 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value for six consecutive years.
Sergeant Steve Vierthaler received boxes full of prescription drugs and personal care products on Wednesday, August 4 at Ray’s Pharmacy on Orcas. He said about 50 percent of the items handed in were controlled substances. A steady stream of clients kept him at the pharmacy from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Sandy Playa stepped down from her position as a San Juan County Parks and Rec Commissioner last month, leaving a current vacancy for an Orcas island representative.
“I’ve got lots of irons in the fire,” said Playa. “I was tired. It takes a fair amount of time and energy to travel to San Juan Island, and I just didn’t feel like I had enough time to continue to do the job right.”
Two young Orcas men incurred minor injuries July 28 when the Porsche Boxer convertible they were taking for a test drive spun off the road on a curve, rolling into the ditch. The vehicle ended up with its wheels in the air and the passengers hanging upside-down by their seat-belts.

Gleaming metal “birds” of various feather will flock together at the Port of Orcas next weekend, July 30 – August 1 for the 26th annual Orcas Fly In. It’s a time for pilots and friends to throttle back and set their wheels down easy: bogeys and bandits are not invited, and the area’s most notorious airplane thief is safely behind bars.
The weekend is a meeting of old friends and new.
If you flush those old prescription drugs, you could end up drinking them. Toss them into the trash or leave them sitting around in your medicine cabinet and they could be swiped by someone looking to get high – perhaps even a son or daughter, visitor or neighbor.
Soon there will be a better option for all those bottles, beginning Aug. 4.
