Public shoots down Plan B during WSF meeting

With a first-rate view of the San Juans passing by the ferry windows, around 75 islanders gathered aboard the inter-island boat on Jan. 15 to give public testimony regarding the two proposed options for future ferry service. San Juan and Lopez were well represented, while fewer came from Orcas and Shaw than was anticipated.

The results of a recent, albeit unscientific, survey of Orcas businesses conducted by the Sounder yielded better news than might have been expected. When asked how they fared over the holidays and the year in general, some said their numbers were drastically down, while others said business was essentially the same as the previous year. No one said sales were better, although a number of local business owners noticed significantly more island shoppers over the holidays.

Orcas teen paralyzed in snowboarding accident; fund set up for family

Orcas Christian School junior Jordan Griffin was the victim of a snowboarding accident on Wednesday, Dec. 17. The sixteen-year-old was with friends at the golf course when he fell while snowboarding off a jump they had built. He broke his neck and was flown to Harborview in Seattle, where he underwent surgery on Thursday, Dec. 18. His c-six vertebrate was removed and replaced with a titanium rod. He is paralyzed from the chest down.

San Juan public facility groups gather for EPRC Open House

It was all about Eastsound Monday night at the fire hall. The Eastsound Planning and Review Commission (EPRC) held an open house on Monday, Dec. 8 at the Orcas Fire Hall with representatives from Eastsound Sewer and Water, San Juan County, the Conservation District, the Land Bank, OPAL, and more to discuss future projects in or near Eastsound.
