Friends of the San Juans Named a 2012 Puget Sound Champion

Friends of the San Juans was recently named a 2012 Puget Sound Champion by the Puget Sound Partnership. The award was offered in recognition of Friends’ significant effort to create a tool for prioritizing salmon protection and restoration actions for San Juan County.

Friends of the San Juans was recently named a 2012 Puget Sound Champion by the Puget Sound Partnership.  The award was offered in recognition of Friends’ significant effort to create a tool for prioritizing salmon protection and restoration actions for San Juan County.

“This project synthesized local salmon and nearshore habitat data to protect the best places for salmon recovery in the San Juans,” said Tina Whitman, science director at Friends.

The project was led by Whitman and included project partners Coastal Geologic Services and Anchor QEA, an environmental science and engineering firm that focuses on shoreline and river projects.  Over 20 technical advisors from local, state, federal and tribal agencies participated in this project.

This project was funded by the Salmon Recovery Funding Board and represents implementation of Puget Sound Partnership’s regional Action Agenda to help the state reach their 2020 Puget Sound recovery targets.
