Longtime Orcas residents Mary and Steve Gropp will present a slide show and talk about their small boat adventures on Wednesday, April 1, 7 p.m. at the Orcas Senior Center. During the summer months from 1979 through 1985, the couple travelled over 5,000 miles by rowboat or kayak along the wilderness coasts of British Columbia, Alaska, Newfoundland and Labrador, with basic equipment, a slim budget, and no publicity or sponsorship of any kind.
The event will be a benefit fundraiser for the Orcas Island Rowing Association high school crew team. A $5 minimum donation will be asked at the door. The team is supported solely by membership dues and the support of community donors. Coached by Olympic veteran, Tina Brown, the team is open to everybody 14 to 18 years old. Practice starts at 6 a.m., five days a week at Cascade Lake. Contact the rowing association at www.orcasislandrowing.org, email info@orcasislandrowing.org or call head coach Tina Brown at 376-7677.
