Ecstasy smuggler caught near Orcas Island

The discovery was made by a Coast Guard boarding team from the cutter Swordfish near President Channel

The Seattle Times reports that law enforcement officials boarded a vessel on Aug. 27, seizing about 53 pounds of MDMA, a chemical found in the club-drug ecstasy. They detained a citizen of Taiwan.

The discovery was made by a Coast Guard boarding team from the cutter Swordfish near President Channel, off Orcas Island, according to a Coast Guard statement.

Wen-Xian Zhang, 24, was transferred to federal authorities, according to the statement, and has been charged with possession and importing MDMA with intent to distribute. The charges could both result in up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine.

According to the Times, Coast Guard Petty Officer First Class George Degener said he didn’t know where the boat was headed. He said the illegal cache was discovered during a search as the boarding crew noticed suspicious activity.
