At its Nov. 17 meeting, the Orcas Island Yacht Club presented a check for $1032 to the Orcas Island Children’s House, which came from proceeds from their annual Benson Cub sailing race around Waldron Island. The Benson Cup, held since 1981 on the first Saturday in October, is named for Father Glion Benson, the “Seagoing Vicar” of the San Juan Islands, who ministered the islands during the years 1956-1968, while chugging around on an old converted Navy whaleboat. Proceeds from the race are donated to the Children’s House, an Orcas Island non-profit dedicated to providing healthy, creative, play-based early education for infants, toddlers and preschoolers.
