The 3rd and 4th grade students from Orcas Island Elementary School have been busy learning about the Ecology and Geology of their local surroundings. With the help of the Orcas Island Educational Foundation’s Outdoor Education funds and Friends of Moran Education funds, these students recently had the opportunity to connect at Moran State Park with local scientists from Kwiaht, The Center for the Historical Ecology of the Salish Sea, as well as a local geologist. This was one of four trips the students will take to study life in and around Cascade lake throughout the year. During their adventurous day, the 3rd and 4th graders collected plant, insect, and animal specimens from the lake and its tributaries. The specimens were then sorted, identified, and observed closely under microscopes. The findings were discussed with the Kwaiht scientists and compared to the findings from their October study of the lake. Predictions were made as to what they might discover in the lake in May. At a second station the students worked with local geologist, Michael Yeaman, to investigate the incredible fluvial (water influenced) changes that occurred during our tremendous flooding this past winter. Michael also worked with the students on rock identification. A third learning experience was a nature walk with Marta Branch to learn more about bird identification and how to keep a proper nature journal. What an incredible experience our island has given these students. Thank you, Orcas Island Educational Foundation and Friends of Moran!
