Orcas Center and the Orcas Recreation Program will once again this year hold Theatre Camp from June 22 to July 3. All children ages six and older, including teens, may participate in the two-part theatre camp of maskmaking and storytelling with masks.
In part one of Theatre Camp, students will learn the art of Maskmaking with Diane Trapp. Each camp participant will create an original mask.
Trapp, a maskmaking instructor, is renowned for her mask masterpieces. Her work has been seen in stage productions, masked balls, Halloween events and on dancers in New Orleans streets. Theatre Camp and the Olga Strawberry Council, which are presenting two additional workshops in maskmaking for adults, are sponsoring her on Orcas this summer. For information about the adult workshops, please contact Julia Evans at 376-5978.
The second part of Theatre Camp involves learning the art of performing with a mask, taught by Mik Kuhlman, a veteran actress as well as a movement and conceptual artist. She was the Associate Artistic Director for Seattle Mime Theatre and has long-time artistic associations with UMO Ensemble.
Theatre Camp will culminate in an informal performance by the participants on July 3.
Tuition is $200. Participants will meet Monday, June 22 through Wednesday, June 24 from 10 a.m. to 1 pm daily for maskmaking and from Thursday, June 25 through July 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for performing.
