Why it pays to shop on the rock | Editorial

You’re probably thinking: if I hear “shop locally” one more time…

While it may be an overused phrase, we cannot emphasize how important it is to really practice this philosophy.

First and foremost, the money we spend here stays here. It helps pay local wages, support local community services, put food on local tables, pay local rents and mortgages. And it funnels through to the many non-profits by the generous donations of local businesses.

Do your holiday shopping on the mainland, and your money stays on the mainland.

The truth of it is, if we don’t buy at our island stores and eat in our island restaurants, they will close.

Here’s another compelling reason: we have some very cool shops here. Browse through an island store and you will see an eclectic – and affordable – mix of merchandise.

It’s also pretty fun to buy from someone you know and who knows you. It’s more casual and way more friendly. Chances are you’ll bump into neighbors and friends – it can become a social event.

Many of our island stores carry products that were made right here on this very soil. Gifts that carry the scent of the Salish Sea tend to be just a little more special to our off-island family and friends.

This year, the Chamber of Commerce is offering an added incentive: if you buy on island, you could win $100.

On Dec. 10, businesses will be staying open late for shoppers. For every $20 you spend, you will receive a raffle ticket. One winner will be awarded a prize of $100 cash.

This was also offered on Dec. 3, the day of the tree lighting ceremony in Eastsound.

Only one ticket will be given per store, but the chamber encourages shoppers to buy at multiple stores for more entries.

Participating businesses include:

Ace Hardware; Aurora Company; Body Boat Blade; Bucking Doe Studio; Cherry T’s Consignment Store; Clothes Horse; Crow Valley Pottery; Darvill’s Bookstore; Eastsound Instruments; Eclipse Charters Gift Shop; Gordeaux’s; Healing Arts Center; Jillery; Kay’s Antiques; Kathryn Taylor Chocolates; Leapin’ Lizards; Millie’s Antiques, Art & Collectibles; Moon Glow Arts & Crafts; Nest; Office Cupboard; Olga’s; Orcas Outfitters; Pawki’s For Pets; Peter Fisher Gallery; Poppies Fine Yarn; Ray’s Pharmacy; Spirit of the Northwest; Shinola Jewelry; Smith & Speed Mercantile; Tres Fabu; two drews; Warm Valley Orchard; and Wood’s Cove.

So when you are making a list and checking it twice, remember to check out the cool stuff right here in your own island community. There is a lot to enjoy – and share – in shopping locally.
