How OASIS works | Letter

I am writing to respond to the question about OASIS funding raised by Janet Knowles in her letter to the editor. I want to begin by saying a few things about OASIS. OASIS Alternative School is a Washington State defined ALE (Alternative Learning Experience). In OASIS, each student has an individual plan that outlines the student’s learning goals and activities. These goals and activities are planned to ensure that the student meets the state academic standards expected of all students in the state. This individual plan is prepared by an experienced teacher who also monitors the student’s progress. The progress of each student is assessed through, at a minimum, weekly check-ins and monthly assessments with the teacher. We are proud of our work with OASIS students K-12 and excited that we are able to provide for an excellent education for each of the students enrolled.

State funding pays for all of the expenses of educating students in the OASIS Alternative School K-8. No local levy or other local funds are used to support these students whether they live on island or off. Once the expenses of OASIS K-8 are paid, about 12 percent of this year’s state funds generated by OASIS K-8 enrollment remain with the district to be used locally. These funds are used to support local students and programs including facilities maintenance.

With the additional enrollment from OASIS K-8 and the support of the community, we have been able to increase our teaching staff and our maintenance and custodial staff. Thanks to the support of the community and OASIS K-8, we have been able to retain our advanced classes, provide additional support for students and small class sizes in most grades despite significant state cuts this year to school funding. Our buildings and grounds are looking better, we provide employment to more islanders, and we continue to provide an excellent education to students both on and off the island.

OASIS Alternative School is a gift to the students enrolled in OASIS K-12 and to the students enrolled in Orcas K-12. We are all delighted with its success and hope that it continues to benefit all of the students we serve. I am happy to discuss OASIS or any other aspect of the Orcas Island School District with anyone interested. Please call me at the district office at 376-2284 or on my cell phone at 298-1800.
