We have two great people I know personally who are running for the County Council seat for Orcas West. I am happy that the hard work that all of us (former) freeholders did in restructuring our county government has lead to the kind of candidates who are running.
To the puzzlement of some of my friends, I am still supporting Richard Fralick for Councilman. Many folks ask me what his politics are. All I can say is that he works extremely long and efficiently to get the job done fairly for the largest greater good. He enthusiastically digs into volumes of research and homework before forming an opinion or proposing a solution. He gives all ideologically-based opinions equal respect and consideration.
In the polarized democracy we now live in, along with the competing needs and desires of our citizens, Richard’s working style is needed more than ever. What warm and fuzzy attributes he may lack, he more than makes up 10 times over in his productivity and focus to bring everyone on board.
What I appreciate about Richard the most is his ability to take a large and complicated issue, separate out basic needs and stated desires into their appropriate locations within the debate, identify a doable goal, and then move forward in a sensible but definite manner.
As for my own politics, I lean quite heavily on the side of the environment, esthetics, and a green economy. In attaining these goals politically, effectively and reasonably, we can’t afford to alienate those from the other side of the debate who we actually need on the side of the greater good.
