Public meeting about tree removal at Moran State Park

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission will be hosting a public meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 15 to discuss forest health issues and safety concerns around the Moran State Park Retreat Center and Primitive Campground areas.

A portion of the Retreat Center is currently closed due to significant tree disease issues.

In recent times, park staff noticed a gradual – but growing – pattern of dying trees around both of these areas. After consulting with the Department of Natural Resources pathologists, tree pathogens, particularly laminated root rot, were identified throughout portions of these sites and the adjacent forest. This pathogen can cause trees to fail with little or no warning, thus posing a significant risk to visitors, staff, and facilities.

State Parks has identified the need to remove trees on approximately 12.5 acres within and around these developed landscapes and is seeking public comment on these treatments.

Staff will be holding a public meeting on Feb.15 from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. at the Retreat Center Dining Hall, located at the Camp Moran Environmental Learning Center in Moran State Park.

If you are unable to attend the meeting and would like to receive additional information or provide comments, contact the park at moran@parks.wa.gov or 376-2326.
