Several Orcas Island farmers who have been provided local organic produce for the public school cafeteria for some time are receiving recognition in the form of a sign now hanging in the cafeteria.
A local wood artisan, Chris Betcher of Betcher Woodworking made an interchangeable sign to prominently display which farms are providing items included in the school lunch each day.
Betcher and Aaron Baldwin digitized the artwork, programmed it into a 3-D object, then cut it using Betcher’s computer controlled router. After routing, they refined the carving for more detail, and the final painting was done by Christine Booth.
On November 13 the first Farm to Cafeteria celebrity chef, Charles Dalton, owner of The Kitchen, will prepare lunch for all public school students and parents at the school cafeteria. The menu of chili, corn bread, salad and plum tarts will include items from Maple Rock, Black Dog, La Campesina Project, Goldeneye and others who provided items for the Fifth Season project this past summer. The new sign will be employed to recognize those farms.
