Climate change in the Pacific Northwest

The Orcas Island Garden Club will feature Nicholas Bond at its Sept. 19 meeting at 10 a.m. in the Madrona Room of Orcas Center.

Bond is a senior research scientist with the Joint Institute for the Study of the Atmosphere and Ocean of the University of Washington, where he holds a doctorate in atmospheric sciences. He is the state climatologist for Washington.

His research is on a broad range of topics with a focus on the weather and climate of the Pacific Northwest and the linkages between the climate and marine ecosystems of the North Pacific. He cheerfully admits to being a weather geek.

His talk will briefly summarize the past and expected future changes in the global climate. A Pacific Northwest perspective will include a focus on marine ecosystems over the next 40 to 50 years. He will indicate steps that could be taken to slow the growth in greenhouse gas concentration.  The program will conclude with two voluntary small-group activities for participants to explore probable regional outcomes and ways to reduce one’s carbon footprint.
