Orcas kids were treated to a visit from The Lorax.

In honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday and Read Across America Day, the teachers at Orcas Elementary performed “The Lorax,” a fable that chronicles the fate of the truffula trees, to a cafeteria full of young readers on March 2.

“What does everyone in the school – and everyone on this island – have in common?” asked reading teacher Susan Stolmeier. “You were all beginning readers.”

The assembly also celebrated the students’ reading efforts for the month of February. From kindergarten through sixth grade, the kids read a total of 678 books. Principal Kyle Freeman was crowned the King of Hearts in honor of the achievement; he vowed to wear the costume throughout the day. The students were also given Lorax pencils made from recycled newspaper.
