Round the County race review

The 30th annual Round the County Race was run over the weekend of Nov. 11 and 12. More than 100 boats from throughout the Pacific Northwest participated in this event hosted by the Orcas Island Yacht Club and the Friday Harbor Sailing Club. Sailors from the U.S. and Canada attend this race.

Racers lucked out on the weather this year; with the wind almost perfect, for both days. The overall winner was Wicked Wahine a Melges 32 from Seattle. Local sailors were well represented with boats from Orcas (Chinook, Crazy Salsa, Scoundrel, Spadefoot and Time Bandit”), San Juan (Makika and X-1), Lopez (Madame Pele) and even Shaw Island (Tir Na Nog). And if you count boats with islanders crewing you can add in Sir Isaac, Wild Rumpus and Hamachi.

The perennial favorite, Time Bandit, Bob and Barb Brunius J-120, finished the best among the islanders, placing 1st in Division1 and 6th overall, close behind them was Chinook, a Cal 39, owned by Jimmy and Robin Roser, who won Division 4.
